HERE ARE SOME OF THE MANY FABULOUS ARTISTS TO TEACH AND PERFORM IN THE 21st ANNUAL FESTIVAL FLAMENCO INTERNACIONAL DE ALBUQUERQUE: JUANA AMAYA Granddaughter of Francisca Amaya Amaya, niece of the mother of Paco del Gastor, Juana Amaya is a disciple of Pepe Ríos and became partners with his cousin Ramón Barrull, with whom she won the prize for Buerías in 1981 in her home town. The next year she appeared in the Second Bienal of Seville where she danced in, "El Nuevo Compás". Two years later she became the leading dancer in the company of Mario Maya, with whom she paired up with to perform "Ay Jondo!" and "El Amargo" (1984). Up until 1986 she worked in the tablao, "Los Gallos", and two years later she traveled throughout Europe with Cordoba based concert musician Paco Peña, balancing these tours with her presence in Andalucian flamenco festivals. After her stint in Madrid where between 1989 and 1994 she participated in the Cumbre Flamenco in the show, "Estrellas de la Bienal" (1991) and in a production with Joaquín Cortés and Antonio Canales (1993), she returned to Seville to give classes and start her own dance company that she presented at the Trianón Theatre in Paris for the Mont de Marsán Festival in 1994. In 1996 Salvador Távora sought her out to play the role of Carmen. She worked in "Un gitano de Ley", by José Heredia Maya (1997) and in Antonio Canales' "Fuerza Latina", (1999). She is one of the most powerful and charismatic dancers in modern day flamenco. _____________________________________________________________________ JAVIER BARÓN He began at age 7 learning Sevillanas from the Maestro Zarandilla. His interest in flamenco came about at the hand of Pepe Ríos. At age 10 he set out for Madrid where he stayed with his uncle Manolo Rico who was a bullfighter. This allowed him to dedicate himself to dance until he joined the Luisillo company, with whom he performed in 1975 before the Pope Pablo VI. At age 14 he received an honorable mention in the Eighth National Contest of Cordoba for, "Juana La Macarrona" by Mario Maya. Later he won first prize in the televised contest, "Gente Joven". He performed in the National Ballet under the direction of Antonio and Maria Avila and Antonio Gades. Around 1987 he adopted the artistic name, Javier Barón. In the Fifth Bienal of Seville (1988) he won the Second "Giraldillo del Baile" at the young age of 25. After that he played a main role in "Aire y Compás" by Manuel Morao (1993) and put together "Mira qué Famenco!" in 1993, featuring on Sara Baras. He also participated in the Eighth Bienal of Seville in the show dedicated to Antonio (1994). In 1995 he was named director of the "Taller de Creación" (Creation Workshop) in the flamenco department of the Andalucian Center for Dance and in the Ninth Bienal of Seville (1996) he worked in "Por Aquí te Quiero Ver", by Manuel Soler. In 1997 he formed his own dance company and put together the show, "El Pájaro Negro". In the Tenth Bienal (1998) he debuted the show "Sólo por Arte!". In 1999 he choreographed, "Ramito de Locura" for the Andalucian Dance Company and he participated in the Festival of Granada, dancing with Isabel Bayón in "Elegía Flamenca", an homage to Antonio. _________________________________________________________________ ISABEL BAYÓN Dedicated to flamenco from childhood, she was an outstanding student at Matilde Coral's dance school. She graduated in Spanish Dance at age sixteen from the Cordoba and Seville Conservatoires. Her training also covers classical, regional and contemporary dance. Isabel Bayón's career took off early. In the mid-seventies she made her début in a tribute to Antonio Ruiz Soler, presented by the dancer himself. She took part as guest artist in the 1979 Flamenco Congress which paid homage to Antonio Mairena, in the palacial surroundings of Seville's Real Alcázar. She's taken part in countless national and international music and dance festivals. Among the most notable were her solo performances at several editions of Seville's Festival Bienal de Flamenco, where she was a finalist in the 1988 dance awards. She also took part in the Madrid Flamenco Summit. In 1986 she toured Italy as solo bailaora in Milagros Menjíbar and Manolo Marín's show 'Flamenco vivo'. Manolo Marín would also go on to choose her to star in his own company's show 'A contratiempo'. In 1992 she performed in the show 'Azabache' at the Expo in Seville. Two years later, she became part of the Andalusian Dance Company (CAD), under the direction of Mario Maya. Other noteworthy contributions include 'Picasso Flamenco' by the Escena Flamenca company, a performance with Miguel Poveda at the Grec Festival in Barcelona, and the production 'Las huellas de La Argentinita' directed by José Luis Ortiz Nuevo. She also starred in a joint production alongside bailaor Israel Galván as part of the 1998 'Flamenco viene del sur' season, and with the Mario Maya company in 'Los gitanos cantan and bailan a Lorca'. Bailaor Javier Barón also invited her to take part in his show 'Sólo por arte'. She returned to the Compañía Andaluza de Danza under the direction of José Antonio, to perform in 'Elegía Andaluza at the 1999 Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada. In this same year she choreographed 'Oripandó' for the Ballet Nacional de España. As a choreographer, she worked, too, for the CAD in 'Encuentro', in which she also makes a guest appearance. At the 2002 Festival Bienal de Sevilla she presented her show 'Del alma', featuring guest artist Fernando Romero. The show graced events like the 2003 Festival de Jerez and the Turin Festival. At the 2004 Bienal de Sevilla she starred in the flamenco-theater production 'La mujer y el pelele', directed by Pepa Gamboa. _______________________________________________________________
ADELA CAMPALLO
Adela Campallo is born in the Sevillian neighborhood of Cerro del Águila in the bosom of a family with flamenco tradition. In fact, it is in the group formed by her parents, La Familia Campallo (The Campallo Family), where she makes her début at the mere age of nine. She received training at the hands of maestros like José Galván and Manolo Marín. She comes across the chance to measure her worth on reaching the finals of the Young Performers Contest of Seville's 2002 Bienal. From that season on, she begins close collaboration with the Antonio Canales Company, which she is a soloist in. Then in 2004, she premieres the show 'Campallerías' together with her brother, the also bailaor Rafael Campallo, at Seville's Sala Joaquín Turina. The show was later performed again at events such as Festival de Jerez 2003. Shortly thereafter, she performs solo at the Teatro Central in Seville. Adela Campallo joined the Javier Latorre Company in the show 'Rinconete y Cortadillo', performed at Córdoba's Gran Teatro, Seville's Teatro Lope de Vega and Jerez's Teatro Villamarta, among other venues. She also collaborated with the Farruquito Company in 'Alma vieja', which premiered at the 2003 Mont de Marsan Festival, and the Andrés Marín Company in 'Más allá del tiempo'. In September 2005, she closed the 7th Muestra Andaluza de Baile Flamenco (Andalusian Flamenco Dancing Showcase) at the emblematic stage Corral del Carbón in Granada. Two months later, she takes part in the inaugural gala of the Flamenco Viene del Sur (Flamenco Comes from the South) Series 2005/2006 at Seville's Teatro Central, participating in the show 'Otra generación', directed by José Miguel Évora. Adela Campallo, a reputed instructor, has already left a recorded display of her baile in the didactic collection 'Ritmo Flamenco Rhythm'. With a view to 2006, the Sevillian bailaora takes part in Flamenco Festival USA and Festival de Jerez, performing in the Gala de Andalucía. _______________________________________________________________________
Chuscales was born in Antequera, Spain in 1956 and grew up in the midst of one of the most well-known gypsy families in Granada. He started his career as a flamenco dancer, which has given him a command of the various flamenco rhythms. Early in his career, he switched to the guitar and played extensively as a soloist and as an accompanist for some of Spain's top flamenco singers and dancers. Chuscales is of the new generation of flamenco guitarists, following in the footsteps of Paco de Lucia, with amazing technical ability and speed. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Joaquín Encinias began dancing as he began walking. He is a fourth generation flamenco dancer and musician who received his earliest flamenco lessons listening to his grandmother Clarita Garcia de Aranda sing in her garden. Today, Joaquin is widely acclaimed as the premiere male flamenco dancer in the United States. His unique dance style is a dynamic blend of power, passion, technical mastery and elegance. Joaquin's musical talent and deep understanding of the art form make him a highly sought after flamenco artist and instructor. His latest project has been in the forming and directing of the Yjastros: the American Flamenco Repertory Company. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Marisol Encinias began studying flamenco as a very young girl with her grandmother Clarita Garcia de Aranda. As a fourth generation flamenco dancer, her artistic interpretation, stunning in its depth and purity, arises from Marisol's emersion in the art form throughout her childhood. Marisol has studied flamenco with some of the finest flamenco artists in the world. She is an instructor for the National Institute of Flamenco, a member of the University of New Mexico dance faculty, and performs as a soloist with "Yjastros." _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Maria Laura Manzella is a native of Argentina. She began her studies in Argentina, later she traveled to Spain and studied extensively with La Familia Farruco, Manolo Marin, and La Tona. She has performed for many years in various tablaos in Buenos Aires as the premier soloist. She now resides in Argentina, she is the director of her own company. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Theodoro Morca has enjoyed a long and productive career as a dancer, choreographer, teacher, lecturer and author. He has starred in his own companies, MORCA DANCE THEATRE and FLAMENCO IN CONCERT in performances all over the world and in every state in the United States of America. Morca has been guest artist and choreographer with Pilar Lopez, touring throughout Spain, England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Italy. He was featured dancer at the Cafe de Chinitas in Madrid with La Chunga. Morca has appeared as guest and/or choreographer with Lola Montes, Jose Greco, Pilar Lopez, Luis Rivera, Maria Benitez, Tony Alba, Maria Alba Teresa, and many other companies. Morca won the St. Denis Choreographic award in New York City for his Magic Boots Fantasy and Toccata and Fugue in D Minor of J.S. Bach; a choreographic award in Spain; andas also received various fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. As a teacher, his methods are unique, intense and exciting. They stress a firm technical foundation and a deep understanding of how to make steps into a dance, how to look like a dancer, how to feel like a dancer and how to move like a dancer. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Veneno At only 14 years of age El Veneno began his singing career in local tablaos and tabernas in Spain. In 1974 heproduced his first record label with "Los Chorbos" a Flamenco-Fusion group that leveled off the charts at number one. Further down his career path he worked with such figures as: Manolo Caracol, Lola Flores, La Chunga, Antonio Canales and Joaquin Cortes; the list goes on. After working with various companies he continued singing with a group called "Cumbre Flamenca." For 3 years he worked with such greats as: Cristobal Reyes and La Chana. He toured throughout the world with Jose Greco and company. El Veneno is known throughout Spain for his powerful performances. He spent 8 years as the artistic director of "La Venta Del Gato," one of the most noted flamenco tablaos in Spain. During the past year he finished editing his newest CD with the "Los Chorbos," which is called "CHORBOS 2001." A singer from birth with a voice as powerful and profound as his gypsy roots; he is without a doubt a man with the heart of flamenco.
